IA/OWTS Nitrogen-Reducing Septic Systems

An IA/OWTS — Innovative/Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment System — is a nitrogen-reducing septic system approved by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Unlike a traditional cesspool, an IA/OWTS actively treats wastewater on-site and reduces the nitrogen entering Long Island's groundwater and coastal waters. Only SCDHS-approved IA/OWTS systems are eligible for the SIP and SSRP grants.
Eligibility
- Must appear on the current SCDHS list of approved IA/OWTS technologies
- Sized appropriately for the number of bedrooms and daily flow
- Installed by a Suffolk County–licensed installer
- Designed by a licensed engineer with SCDHS Office of Wastewater Management approval

Common questions
How is an IA/OWTS different from a regular septic system?
A conventional septic system separates solids but does not reduce nitrogen. An IA/OWTS actively treats wastewater and cuts nitrogen output by 50–90%, protecting drinking water and coastal ecosystems.
Which IA/OWTS brands are approved in Suffolk County?

Does an IA/OWTS need maintenance?
Yes. All approved IA/OWTS systems require a maintenance contract with annual inspections. This is factored into your grant scope up front.
