Why Is This Funding Available?

Long Island relies almost entirely on groundwater for its drinking water. Older cesspools and conventional septic systems can release excess nitrogen into the ground, which may impact groundwater, bays, harbors, and local waterways.

To help protect Long Island's drinking water, bays, and waterways, New York State and Suffolk County have established funding programs that encourage homeowners to replace aging septic systems with modern nitrogen-reducing Innovative/Alternative (I/A) systems.

As a result, qualified homeowners may be eligible for up to $45,000 in available funding toward the replacement of an existing septic system.
