Who qualifies for septic funding?

Per the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, your property must (at a minimum): be an existing residential home (single-family, two-family, or single-family with one accessory apartment); use a cesspool or septic system that is being replaced and NOT be connected to sewers or within a proposed sewer area; have a valid Certificate of Occupancy and a current Town-issued property tax bill; be current on property taxes with no liens or foreclosure; and have a deed on file with the Suffolk County Clerk. The I/A project must be approved by the SCDHS Office of Wastewater Management.

How much funding can I receive?

Qualifying Suffolk County homeowners can stack two grants for up to $45,000 total: the County Septic Improvement Program (SIP) provides up to $20,000 per property, and the NY State Septic System Replacement Program (NYS SSRP) provides up to 75% of eligible costs, not to exceed $25,000 per property. Final amounts depend on scope of work and which programs your project qualifies for.

Will this affect my credit score?

No. Our eligibility check does not involve a credit pull. If you later choose a financing-based program, that lender may run their own check — but we'll always tell you upfront before anything is run.

How long does the process take?

Most Suffolk County homeowners receive an eligibility review within 1 business day. SCDHS prioritizes applications with a documented system failure ahead of all other applications. Once your project is approved by the SCDHS Office of Wastewater Management and your grant is awarded, you'll be notified by email with further processing instructions.

What documents will I need?

Plan to gather: a valid Certificate of Occupancy, a current Town-issued property tax bill, your deed (on file with the Suffolk County Clerk), and proof you're current on property taxes. If your system has failed, any inspection report or pump-out record helps prioritize your application. For the full installation path, your project will also need SCDHS Office of Wastewater Management approval.

Do I have to pay anything to apply?

The eligibility check, document review, and consultation with us are free. Note that permit application fees, engineering/design, and post-installation landscaping are the homeowner's responsibility and are not eligible costs under the grant. If you install with us, we reduce our design fee.

What kinds of septic work qualify?

Accepted Answer

Replacing a cesspool or septic system with an approved Innovative/Alternative (I/A) Onsite Wastewater Treatment System — installed by a vendor on the Suffolk County Approved Installer List — qualifies under the County SIP and NY State SSRP programs. Routine pumping and minor repairs do not. Grant-funded systems require annual professional maintenance; the County SIP includes funding for the initial 3-year maintenance period.
